Sidebar Content for Facebook
You made up your mind; you're going to do something with your sidebar on Facebook.
Well, you've made the right decision but do you know what you want in it?
Your logo, yea of course, but there is so much more you can do with it. Perhaps you are planning marketing that will require continually updated Sidebar's? Are you running promotions or competitions. What kind of marketing are you doing, is it brand awareness? or just bragging about your latest work.
The sky is the limit with a sidebar. You can fit a lot into the sidebar and save space on your page for more important things. For example, some of your sales information can be contained in the Sidebar leaving room on the page to create raging and active fans. These are worth so much more than having your page as a link portal.
I have talked about the way our eyes scan a website from left to right. On Facebook the page is different and the rules change. On a regular website our eyes scan from top left to top right alas why the website header is so important. On Facebook our eyes have a tendency to go from top left then scan down onto the sidebar before continuing towards the top right corner. This is because Facebook has "taught" our minds to deal with a Facebook page by subjecting us to a certain page layout a few million times.
This is the key to sidebars for Facebook. Armed with this knowledge as to how we see a Facebook page, you need to ask yourself how you can use this to your advantage?
It gives you the ability to tell the visitor who you are, what you do, what you can do for them and what you are doing for them in the future. All this should happen within a second of them viewing your page. You can do all this just by utilising the sidebar for Facebook to its full potential.
Does it stop there? There is more, but we will leave that for another day.. :-)
